President Horta receives Doctor of Honoris Causa from CDU

DILI (TOP) - President and Nobel Peace Laureate José Ramos-Horta, received the most prestigious academic honour Doctor Honoris Causa from Charles Darwin University.

The award was conferred to President Ramos-Horta by the Honourable Trevor Riley AO KC Chancellor, during the graduation ceremony held for more than 2220 graduands on 14 May 2026 at the University’s Casuarina campus in Darwin.

The Doctor Honoris Causa is the highest academic honor bestowed by universities worldwide, recognizing individuals of exceptional merit and lifetime achievement in fields such as peace, culture, science, and politics.

The award represents profound international recognition of the President’s extraordinary and sustained contribution to regional and global stability.

“Throughout his leadership President Ramos-Horta has consistently championed the role of universities, scholars, and future leaders in strengthening democratic institutions, advancing regional cooperation, and addressing complex global challenges. CDU is proud to recognise an individual who has shown a lifelong commitment to peace, democracy, and the independence and development of Timor-Leste. Given CDU’s deep and enduring connection with Timor-Leste, and our commitment to fostering opportunity across Northern Australia, this is a fitting acknowledgement for an internationally respected leader,” stated Professor Fiona Coulson, Interim Vice-Chancellor and President.

Reflecting on the significance of the award, President Ramos-Horta stated:

“I have the honour to acknowledge the decision of Charles Darwin University to confer upon me Doctor Honoris Causa. I accept this distinction with deep humility and sincere gratitude. This recognition is a tribute not only to my personal journey, but also to the resilience and aspirations of the people of Timor-Leste in their enduring pursuit of peace, reconciliation, and development.”

President Ramos-Horta’s presence held particular significance for Charles Darwin University graduates, staff, and partners in the Northern Territory and beyond.
