Doctor Daniel Died From a Heart Attack

Oekusipost.com Dili - The departure of a US doctor who has helped the poorest in Timor-Leste through his medical services since 1998 has brought sadness to all the people, especially the poor who have been receiving free health services.

Doctor Daniel Murphy, who was born on September 23, 1944 in Alton, Iowa, United States, died at his residence in Pantai Kelapa, Dili on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at around 8 pm local time.

Bairo Pite Clinic Manager, Inacio dos Santos, explained that Daniel's health condition had been in good health, and there were no symptoms of illness, and always went to the clinic, but on Tuesday morning the deceased called to Inacio that today he would not come the office because he felt his body condition is not healthy.

"This morning he called me that his health was not good, he needed to rest. I also ask him to rest a little, " Inacio told reporters at the Bairo Pite clinic Tuesday April 14, 2020 at 8 pm.

"And at 8: 5 that night, his daughter called me that Dr. Daniel was not moving anymore, I went from home to the clinic and with some medical personnel headed to his house. When he got there he didn't breathe, we didn't try to save him either,” he explained.

He stated that his health was good and there were no diseases, but it was suspected that doctor Daniel  died of a heart attack.

"For the past few months I have asked him to rest but he does not want to. And he ordered me that if he dies this clinic must remain open and his body must be buried in the clinic doorway so that patients going in and out can step on it, his body cannot be sent to America," he explained.

Dr Daniel Murphy, founder of the Bairo Pite Clinic in Timor-Leste. Dr Murphy has spent his career treating victims of illness in Mozambique, Laos, Nicaragua and, most recently, Timor-Leste. He arrived at the former Portuguese colony in 1998 and said what happened next was the two most dangerous years of his life when he treated people injured in the conflict who were thought to have claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians. He still lives and works in Timor-Leste at the Bairo Pite Clinic where he treats victims of tuberculosis, HIV, yellow fever and many other diseases. He also helps in delivering up to 100 babies a month.

Thank you very much for the humanitarian assistance you have provided in Timor-Leste. Goodbye doctor Daniel Murphy and rest in peace for ever.
