Nobel Peace Prize winner calls for strengthening democratic values during the campaign period

LAKLUBAR (TOP) – 1996 Nobel Peace Prize laureate José Manuel Ramos-Horta who is also one of the presidential candidates with number 14 has always called for strengthening a healthy democratic culture and dialogue with politicians in Timor-Leste in his first mandate.

Presidential candidate Horta has conducted his opening campaign in the Fuiloro village of Lautem municipality on March 2nd, which was observed directly from the European Union international observatory and the General Elections Commission.

The first day of the campaign was attended by thousands of people calling for Horta to correct the RDTL constitution which President of the Republic Francisco Guterres Lú Olo allegedly violated during his mandate.

“We must strengthen the culture of democracy, stability, peace in our hearts. I want the culture of peace to be instilled in the hearts of every citizen”.

Even though the other presidential candidate always accuses and defame Horta as one of the author of the political crisis that happened in 2006 and 2007 but Horta has denied all this accusation by saying the crisis has happened before his mandate as president of the republic.

“Some people says if I’m elected, I will bring and create a new crisis. I will not create the crisis but I want to restore our constitution and promote dialogue with all political parties in my first mandate,” Horta denied the accusation from FRETILIN candidacy.

Horta also observe the economic development during Lú Olo’s presidency indicate there is no progress compare to previous government which led by Prime-Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão.

"We start with dialogue to fix our constitution. This election is very important if you want to our country have a good democracy you have to choose well. I do not have enemy with all political parties, I want to accumulate all political party,” say Horta.

Meanwhile, Secretary General of FRETILIN party Mari Bim Amude Alkatiri accuse Horta is incompetent to be a president of the republic.

But Horta said, he does not want to respond to this accusation.

“Let the people decided in this election. They will get the answer in the final election,” he said.
