President Horta launches solar photovoltaic installation project

LALEIA (TOP) - The President of the Republic, J. Ramos-Horta, together with Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, launched a solar photovoltaic installation project in the Laleia Administrative Post, Manatuto Municipality on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

This installation project serves as a principal component of the renewable energy initiative in accordance with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP 2015-2030), and continues the current government's commitment to improving the electricity supply system in Timor-Leste.

"I appreciate the Prime Minister's leadership; it is not easy to realize commitments with investors and international agencies to establish an agreement like this one. Electricity is a crucial sector for economic development and investment."

President Ramos-Horta also commended the ministers who continue to demonstrate good performance in serving the people, particularly all the relevant ministries that collaborated to ultimately reach the final agreement alongside the Prime Minister for this energy project in Laleia.

According to estimates, this photovoltaic installation project will reduce current operational costs from 100%. This means that for the electrification system, where the government currently invests over one hundred thousand US dollars annually on fuel, costs will be reduced to between 70% and 50%, as this project will produce 72 megawatts of solar generation capacity along with a 36-megawatt battery energy storage system.
