Forgiveness and dialogue are the keys to regional stability

JAKARTA (TOP) - The President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and 1996 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, José Ramos-Horta, emphasized that the courage to forgive and a commitment to dialogue are the keys to regional stability.

The Timor-Leste President made this statement while speaking as the keynote speaker at the ERIA School of Government Leadership Lecture Series, held at Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

With the theme "Leadership in Dangerous Times: Human Rights, Nation-Building, and Regional Diplomacy," the Nobel Peace Prize laureate reflected on Timor-Leste's long journey from conflict to independence and becoming a strategic partner in Southeast Asia.

He stated that leadership amidst global uncertainty requires a strong foundation of trust.

In a warm dialogue session, Ramos-Horta described the relationship between Timor-Leste and Indonesia as one of the most significant success stories of reconciliation in the world. He expressed special appreciation to the Indonesian leaders who played a role in their country's transition.

"We chose the path of national reconciliation rather than being trapped in a cycle of revenge. It takes patience to rebuild trust and a commitment to continue looking forward," said Ramos-Horta.

He also emphasized that during the struggle, his institution ensured that no Indonesian civilians were targeted, to prevent the growth of inter-communal hatred in the future.

Dean and Managing Director of the ERIA School of Government, Nobuhiro Aizawa, stated that Timor-Leste's experience offers valuable lessons for policymakers in Southeast Asia. He considered the friendship between Timor-Leste and Indonesia a pillar of regional stability today.

"This experience makes us optimistic about Timor-Leste's accession to ASEAN. President Ramos-Horta's leadership demonstrates how a history of conflict can be transformed into a future of collaboration," said Aizawa.

Echoing this sentiment, ERIA President Tetsuya Watanabe added that the best leadership lessons come not only from textbooks, but from figures who directly shaped history.

"Experience in building peace and promoting diplomacy is highly relevant for the next generation of leaders," he said.

He believes that although Timor-Leste has a very long historical past and with diverse cultures, Timor-Leste will remain united for common goals. The event was attended by diplomats, government officials, and academics who enthusiastically explored governance strategies and regional cooperation.
