The Minority Coalition is Ready to Form a New Government

Oekusipost.com Dili – The new coalition between the FRETILIN party and the Popular Liberation Party (PLP), although only with 31 seats, is ready to form a new government if the presidential decission favor to them.

The head of the PLP party, Taur Matan Ruak, said his party was ready to form a coalition with the FRETILIN party to form a new government to come.

Taur Matan Ruak, the current Prime Minister added, in the early elections of 2018 the majority of the people gave confidence to the Majority Alliance to Progress (AMP) party. But in January 2020, the draft 2020 state budget did not pass in the national parliament because most CNRT party members chose to be absent.

"This is a sign that CNRT has no more trust in the government that I lead. This situation needs a new alternative to establish a new foundation to form an alliance for a new formation, but it depends on the decision of the President of the Republic, the PLP Party Chairman told reporters at Hotel-Timor, Dili Saturday, March 21, 2020.

With the current situation in the country, TMR stressed, there is no need to wait because we don't have much time".

He added that PLP was ready to work with FRETILIN to open new avenues for resolving domestic political turmoil and also unite a force to combat the Corona Virus case which had already been a positive case in Timor Leste.

"PLP is ready to open a new path together with the FRETILIN party".

Early election results in May 2018, PLP got 8 seats and the FRETILIN party got 23, so there were only 31 seats compared to the coalition led by CNRT party Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao who had 34 seats in the national parliament.

Looking back at the real situation in 2017 that, at that time the head of state Francisco Guterres Lu Olo installed a minority government led by Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri, the actual Secretary General of the FRETILIN party, but finally had to fall because the majority party was blocking the government's program at the time.
In connection with this, the Secretary General of the FRETILIN party, Mari Alkatiri gave assurances to the public that, even though the new coalition between FRETILIN and the PLP had only 31 seats but was confident that the government program and the draft state budget would pass in the national parliament because all parties in the national parliament had tired.

"I believe that the program will pass, the draft state budget will also pass because all political parties are tired, Alkatiri promised.

Although there has not been a decision from the President of the Republic regarding domestic political deadlock, politically Alkatiri earlier declared that there would be no early elections and stressed that the formation of a new coalition between the two political parties was correct.

"We issued a statement to establish a platform to bring together all people in this country. And also to end domestic political turmoil, "said Alkatiri.
