Military threatens the freedom of demonstrations in Timor-Leste

DILI (TOP) – All citizens are guaranteed the freedom to hold peaceful meetings without weapons, without first obtaining permission, and all citizens have the right to hold demonstrations, based on the law, according to article 42 of the Timor-Leste constitution.

Freedom of expression and information, freedom of the press and social media of communication are also guaranteed in the constitution of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, unfortunately the implementation process is still in doubt because, a few days ago the Timor-Leste National Police allowed the National Resistance group to Defend Justice and the Constitution on the leadership of Angela Freitas to carry out a demonstration starting from 4-18 September but the FALINTIL-Forsa Defeza Timor-Leste (F-FDTL) militar already surrounded her residence in Dili.

There were 7 seven militants who surrounded Angela Freitas on Tuesday 1 September 2020. They all covered their faces with cloths and were equipped with rifles. Photo of The Oe-Kusi Post / Marcelino Bata.

After obtaining permission from the police, Major General F-FDTL, Lere Anan Timur publicly stated that if Angela and António Ai-Tahan Matak had the courage to carry out the demonstration to overthrow the President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres Lú Olo, he would arrest and tie them.

Lere continued, as a 24-year veteran who led F-FDTL would not allow any group to carry out a "coup" against resistance leaders such as Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, Taur Matan Ruak and Francisco Guterres Lú Olo.

"I heard that Angela wants to overthrow the President of the Republic on September 4, 2020. I ask Angela that you are the one who overthrew the President or asked for the rope to tie you".

He stated that in case of violence during the demonstration period, Lere would lead his soldiers to arrest and tie Angela and Ai-Tahan Matak.

Demonstrations will start on September 4, but Major General Lere has sent 7 F-FDTL members to surround Angela's residence in the Gricenfor, Cristo Rei Sub-District, Dili on Tuesday 1 September 2020.

The Oe-Kusi Post observed that, when the F-FDTL militants arrived at Angela's house, she immediately fled to another place.

"I am outside now, I am not at home because now the F-FDTL militants have surrounded my house, and they want to arrest me".

"We always work together because we have not committed a crime. You know that all this time we have been doing everything according to the regulations, we have received permission from the police to guard us on a demonstration ”.
