Xanana joined PNTL Mama Bolu in disinfecting the homes of flood victims

DILI (TOP) – Almost every day from morning to night, the former prime minister of Timor-Leste, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, is always with the small people in the Tasi-Tolu lake.

Floods and landslides that occurred on 4 April destroyed thousands of houses in Dili and other places as well. The natural disaster also claimed the lives of around 42 according to government data.

There are still thousands of refugees in Dili, and some have also returned to their homes after the floodwaters decreased and dried up.

It has been almost a month, the former commander of FALINTIL, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão has spent his time in providing humanitarian assistance to flood victims both in Dili and in several municipalities.

Meanwhile, the government itself has ‘begging’ for foreign aid to help the victims of floods and landslides, which incidentally is less effective and transparent.

Thousands of houses close to the Tasi-Tolu lake were flooded in early April. This natural disaster caused residents in that area forced to flee to other places, and there were hundreds of residents who decided to flee to the mountains.

The Oe-Kusi Post has monitored Xanana's activities in the Tasi-Tolu lake, including supplying clean water to hundreds of residents in this area, and also helping to reduce lake water so that it has enabled hundreds of residents to return to their submerged houses in early April. On Sunday May 2, he visited several tens of refugees on the shore of this lake, and found there were lots of flies. With this in mind, Xanana asked a volunteer organization working with the Timor-Leste National Police under the short name PNTL Mama Bolu to help disinfect the homes of the refugees.

Xanana's request received a positive response from PNTL Mama Bolu, and on Monday 3 May, this volunteer organization with Xanana went to disinfect the homes of flood victims in Tasi-Tolu.

The PNTL Mama Bolu volunteer organization has played an active role in disinfection in both public and private offices.

When Xanana and the PNTL Mama Bolu volunteer organization arrived at this refugee camp, the refugees felt very happy, and they stated that even though they were still living under a tarpaulin tent, when they saw Xanana's physical presence they also felt happy.

“I represent the refugees here and are very grateful and thankful to uncle Nana because he has always been active in visiting us and giving us assistance. We also express our gratitude to the PNTL volunteer organization Mama Bolu who has also helped disinfected our humble home,” said refugee Rui Moniz Lopes.
